how to have an eclectic style in 2021
Do you think that eclectic design is created by throwing whatever you find colorful or weird into your space? Well, I’m here to tell you that you are entirely wrong about what eclectic design is! And I will show you what real eclectic design is all about and explain the basics of eclectic design in this blog.
You might be surprised when you realize how difficult to achieve this style after reading this blog. If you are already curious, grab yourself a cup of tea or coffee because we will dive deep into the eclectic design.
There is a fine line between being an eclectic and total mess, so if you don’t want to end up with a cluster, you have to make sure that you know what you are doing because it’s an intricate style that might be potentially chaotic.
Even though some people assume that the eclectic style is the one that you throw everything into space randomly, it is far from that because the eclectic style is particular and intentional.
I always believe that creating an eclectic space is like creating regularity in irregularity because it’s not about getting rid of the coordination completely. Still, instead, it’s about creating coordination in the background.
So it’s always intentional, so after I tell you what an eclectic design is not about, I want to explain what a mixed strategy is:
Eclectic style is a careful and intentional mixture of various types and eras that can create cohesiveness in the space. This is the easiest way I can give you a description of eclectic design.
So like I said before, it’s one of the most complex interior design styles, so you have to step out of the box if you want to achieve a lovely eclectic home.
Before we jump into the basics of eclectic design, I want to say that you should never design only one room in your home’s eclectic style. Instead, your whole house should be designed in an eclectic style to create cohesiveness and create a flow in your space.
1. Use your Favorite Styles
Let’s start with the first one that I have said in the description of eclectic style eclecticism is all about cohesively blending different styles and eras.
So what I mean by that in an eclectic design, you can use your favorite styles together, such as modern with rustic style or industrial with traditional style.
You can mix the types depending on your taste. You can also choose more than two kinds, but I wouldn’t suggest selecting more than three to control the space.
So if you are wondering how can you cohesively mix different styles, there are a few different ways, and I will explain to you right now:
First of all, you can stick to a color palette throughout your eclectic design process, repetitively using the same colors to create a flow in your space. It could be useful to create a common ground between different styles to achieve a cohesive look.
You can choose many different colors depending on your choice, but I suggest you stick to one neutral color and three or four accent colors in your space.
Secondly, you can choose your furniture with similar lines to create a sense of unity.
For example, you can go for clean straight lines or curved lines in your furniture choice. So even though the styles are different, they will still communicate to each other and create a cohesive look in your space.
Eclectism is also about mixing different eras. You can incorporate antique decorations with modern or even futuristic furniture in your space, and it’s like a combination of old and new.
So eclectic design brings different eras together, and therefore it’s quite adaptable to time, which means it’s timeless, and your space will never be out of fashion with the time. I think it’s fantastic. It’s really up to you to decide what kind of styles or eras you want to mix in your eclectic home.
It’s quite flexible, another basic rule. After all, you should never use matching furniture and an eclectic design because everything should be like a unique piece in an eclectic home.
I know using matching furniture is not popular today as it was in the past, but it still exists. Hence, I wanted to include it in this blog because it’s a big no for an eclectic home design if you already have matching furniture in your space. Still, you want to design your home with an eclectic style; you might consider painting your furniture or changing the fabrics to create an eclectic style.
Another essential of eclectic design is that patterns and textures play a huge role. It’s necessary for this design style because we can use patterns and textures to bring different types harmoniously.
There are two main ways to achieve a sense of unity in the space by using patterns and textures first one is that you can use similar patterns and textures in different colors.
For example, if you like stripes, you can include strip designs on your furniture’s fabrics on the rug or your space’s decorations.
This will connect these individual items on common ground, and it will prevent it from turning into a mess or the second one is that you can use completely different patterns and textures as long as you stick to the same colors.
For example, if you like floral and geometrical patterns, you can use them in your space, but you have to make sure that you stick to your room’s same accent colors. You can use the same color on your textiles wall art or other accessories. This will help these unique pieces speak the same language, not to face any chaos, or your space will not look like a garage sale.
Whether you choose to use the same color or same textures and patterns, you should repeat using them to create a flow and also cohesive look in your space.
Contrast is also significant in eclectic style! You should use contrasting materials to create much more interest in the space. You can use polished wood along with rough decorations, and you can also consider layering soft textures such as velvet cotton leather and many more to create some contrast in the space.
Another eclectic style essential is that you should always use neutral-looking background colors in your space. You can use white, off-white, gray-beige on your walls. You should choose a natural background because eclectic design elements are already eye-catching, and they stand out. Hence, a neutral experience is necessary to create some calm in the space and relieve the eyes.
You should always create a focal point in eclectic design. This is one of the rules that you have to follow to prevent chaos in the space. The most significant piece of advice I can give you about how to choose a focal point for your eclectic room is that you should always keep in mind that eclectic design is mostly unexpected and exciting, so you can choose a focal point that has a different style compared to the most of the focal points can be anything.
For example, suppose your furniture is relatively modern and elegant. In that case, you can use an oversized antique mirror as a focal point in your living space, and this will also create some contrast in your eclectic home, or if your furniture is quite traditional, you can create a modern art wall as a focal point with vibrant pieces of art by the way pop art and also abstract art is trendy in an eclectic design, this approach will be unexpected and exciting it will also create contrast in the space which we enjoy in eclectic style.
