How to Combine Interior Design Styles?
Top Tips For Mixing Design Styles 2021
Do you feel like only one interior design style is not enough to express your personality in your home? If yes you are on the right blog and trust me you are not alone because most of us are not willing to stick to only one interior design style in our homes because we find it restricting or sometimes even boring.
Therefore I’m going to explain how can you mix your favorite interior design styles in a way that both of them can shine and also complement each other in today’s blog. you can use these tips to mix any kind of interior design style and create your own unique space, if you want to learn more about that let’s go.
The first tip that I want to give you about mixing different styles is that please try not to mix more than two different styles if you don’t want to confuse your space. There are of course some ways to connect different interior design styles which we will talk about in a bit but always remember that mixing two styles is the best if you want to create a space that has an identity, because like I said before if you use three, four or even more it can turn into chaotic space.
The first thing that you should do is to define which styles do you want to incorporate in your home if you have already done that now you can decide which one is going to be your dominant style and which one is going to be your secondary style and the reason that you need to do this is that you don’t want these styles to compete in your home, but rather you want them to complement each other in your space.
Now at this point, I want to explain the 80- 20 rule that you can apply in your space when you mix different styles.
so 80 as you can guess is going to be the dominant style that you want to have more in your space and 20 is going to be your secondary style that is going to complement your main style.
You should apply this rule when you mix different interior design styles in your home. If you want to have a clear expression of your style. otherwise, let’s say you decided to use the same percentage for different styles so 50 modern and 50 rusty.
when you do that these styles are going to compete with each other rather than complete each other.
You are just going to confuse the space and you will create a space that has no identity. however, if you change it to 80 to 20 the styles are going to complement and also highlight the best parts of each other in the space.
So how or where can you incorporate your secondary style or complementary style in your space there are two options to include them in your space which I’m going to explain right now.
The first one is using your secondary style on your accent pieces and the second one is that creating focal points using your complimentary style, both of them are great and you can go for any of them but I enjoy creating focal points using complementary style because it can create a bold contrast in the space and make it look very exciting.
for example, let’s say you have 80 traditional styles in your space, so if you add a modern statement piece this could be a fireplace lighting fixture or maybe face line ball decor, which is going to be very popular by the way trust me you will enjoy how these different styles are going to complement each other in your space or if you want to use them on your accent pieces you can go for very minimal soft furnishings in your traditional living room or bedroom and you can also use a very bold colorful modern wallpaper in a traditionally designed space.
Another important tip is that if you mix different interior design styles that are opposite of each other, in other terms, they are contrasting styles trust me your space is going to be much more appealing and also interesting.
for example, if you want to combine a modern minimal approach with rustic style this is going to look nice because these styles are contrasting styles so they are going to complement each other a lot. so one of them is sleeker and uses clean straight lines while the other one highlights more natural organic forms and curvy lines.
So you can take advantage of this to style your space but you don’t necessarily have to only use contrasting colors but it can help you to create a bold space.
Now another very important tip, when you mix different styles, is that you should always connect those styles in some certain ways so, in other words, you should always create a common ground in between them to help them communicate with each other and also blend smoothly.
So how can you create a common ground well the first one is that you can connect them with colors. so basically when you repeat the same accent color or create a similar or common color scheme for both styles in your space this is going to connect these two different styles harmoniously.
another way to connect different styles is by using repetitive textures and patterns.
So let’s say you want to use a specific pattern in your space, if you use the same pattern in both styles this is going to create a common ground between them, or if you want to use a specific texture in your space and if you include them in both styles again this is going to connect these two different styles and make them look nice and blend smoothly together.
Always remember that it doesn’t matter whether you use colors textures patterns to create a common ground you should always rhythmically do this to create a cohesive look and this will also make your eyes look flow easily in your space.
